About this Training...
This on-line training module is based on the final rule of the Hazardous Materials: Infectious Substances; Harmonization with the United Nations Recommendat ions published by the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) in the Federal Register on June 2, 2006 and is effective on October 1, 2006. An infectious substance is regulated as a hazardous material under the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT's) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). This training module is set to provide personnel of transportation industries with the up to date requirements for transport of infectious substances including following subjects:

Infectious substances classification system

New definition used in transport of infectious substances

Packaging, labeling, and shipping documentation for infectious substances

Personnel preparation and planning for transport infectious substances

Security plan

Emergency response, incident report, and spill management

Personal protective equipment and respirator usage for handling infectious substance spilling/leakage

Special requirements for carriage by aircraft
Additionally, the training module provides links to CDC, EPA, FDA, and OSHA on regulations related to infectious substances and workers' protection, as well as a list of glossary and acronyms.
Upon the completion of this training module, you will be able to:

Identify the new classification for Category A and Category B infectious substances

Distinguish and implement the packaging, labeling, shipping documentation, and personnel training requirement for Category A and Category B infectious substances

Manage the incident of emergency including: emergency response, incident report, spill management, and personnel protection

Implement the special requirement for carriage by aircraft
The training is not intended to cover all issues related to infectious substances management during transportation. Readers need to follow the more comprehensive company specific contingency or spill response plans for emergency response. Readers also need to comply with applicable state regulations.
