Infectious substance is classified as Division 6.2 Hazardous Materials. Any employee who works in a shipping, receiving or material handling area or who may be involved in preparing or transporting Category A infectious substances is required to have training. It is the responsibility of the hazmat employer to meet these training requirements.
A hazmat training may be provided by the hazmat employer or other public or private sources. A hazmat employer must ensure that each of its hazmat employees is tested by appropriate means on the training subjects listed in 49 CFR 172.704. Trainings conducted by employers to comply with the hazard communication programs required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor ( 29 CFR 1910.120 or 1910.1200 ) or the Environmental Protection Agency (40 CFR 311.1), or training conducted by employers to comply with security training programs required by other Federal or international agencies, may be used to satisfy the training requirements listed above with extended addresses in the components listed.
Hazmat employees must receive the initial hazmat training within 90 days of hire or changing a job function which is subject to the HMR. Hazmat employees must also receive the r ecurrent training at least once every 3 years.
When there is a new or revised regulation, a hazmat employee must be instructed regarding the changed requirement prior to perform the task affected by the new or revised rule. A hazmat employee may perform the new or revised requirement under the direct supervision of a properly trained and knowledgeable hazmat employee for a period of 90 days, or until the required training is provided, whichever comes first.
