Lesson 11. Infectious Substances Spill Management

Special Requirements for Infectious Substances Carried by Aircraft

There is special requirement regarding preventing contamination and leakage management for Division 6.2 infectious substances carried by aircraft ( 49 CFR 175.630). The carrier must follow the following requirements:

  • An INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE labeled package may not be carried in the same compartment of an aircraft with any edible material intended for human or animal consumption, unless the INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE labeled package is loaded in a separate unit load device and is not adjacent to the edible when stowed on the aircraft or is loaded in another closed unit load device.

  • Each package, overpack, pallet, or unit load device containing a Division 6.2 material must be inspected for signs of leakage, when unloaded from the aircraft. If evidence of leakage is found, the contaminated cargo compartment must be disinfected to the level that the released material becomes ineffective at transmitting disease.
