Reuse Infectious Substances Containers And Transport Vehicles

An infectious substance container or transport vehicle must be cleaned before reuse by any effective method that will neutralize the infectious substance the packaging previously contained (49 CFR 173.28(f) and 49 CFR 177.843(d)). However, a secondary packaging or outer packaging conforming to the requirements of Category A (49 CFR173.196 ) or Category B (49 CFR173.199) infectious substances does not need not be disinfected prior to reuse if no leakage from the primary receptacle has occurred. The transport vehicle also does not need to be disinfected unless infectious substances are released from its packaging.
