Stormwater Permit Regulated Areas

The following areas within industrial sites are regulated by stormwater permit program:

  • Industrial plant yards

  • Immediate access roads and rail lines used or traveled by carriers of raw materials, manufactured products, waste material, or by-products used or created by the facility

  • Material handling sites

  • Refuse sites

  • Areas used for the application or disposal of process wastewater

  • Areas used for storage and maintenance of material handling equipment

  • Areas used for residual treatment, storage, and disposal

  • Shipping and receiving areas

  • Storage areas (including tank farms) for raw material, intermediates and finished goods

  • Areas where past industrial activity has left significant materials exposed to stormwater

Areas that are within industrial sites and separate and not associated with industrial activities are exempt from stormwater permittings. For example, employee parking lots and office buildings are not subject to stormwater permittings as long as the stormwater discharge from these areas is not contaminated by the discharge from the regulated areas.
