Sample Identification and Labeling

Prior to the collection of the sample, a waterproof, self adhesive sample identification label or tag should be attached to the sample container. This label should contain relevant information for sample analysis such as:

  • Facility name

  • Name of the sample collector

  • Sample's identification number

  • Date and time of sample collection

  • Type of analysis required

  • Location of sample collection

  • Preservatives used

  • Type of sample (grab or composite)

Sample lids should be used to protect the sample’s integrity from the time it is collected to the time it is opened in the laboratory. The information written on the lid should include the following:

  • Collector’s name

  • Date and time of sample collection

  • Sample's identification number

Information on the seal must be identical to the information on the label. In addition, the lid should be taped shut so that the seal must be broken to open the sample container. For samples collected for volatile organics and metals analysis, collectors need to make sure that samples will not be contaminated by the glue from tape and wires from the label tag. Labels should be written with waterproof ink to avoid smearing when samples are stored in a moist environment.
