September 28, 2002
The Houston Airport System has received FAA grants totaling slightly more than $40 million to fund several expansion projects at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), William P Hobby Airport (HOU) and Ellington Field (EFD). These projects are part of the airport’s overall $2.8 billion expansion program.
IAH will receive $2,500,000 in discretionary funds to cover costs associated with security enhancements that include modifying terminal as mandated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to accommodate bulky explosive detection machines used to inspect airline passengers’ checked baggage. IAH will receive $18,400,000 (part of the FAA’s 10 year Letter of Intent commitment) for the completion of the fifth runway, 8L-26R and $6,290,981 to rehabilitate taxiways and extend taxiway shoulders. HOU entitlement funds total $4,169,295, which are earmarked for miscellaneous airfield improvements including rehabilitation and drainage of several taxiways and installation of signage. EFD will receive $9,529,474 to rehabilitate Runway 17R-35L.
Other construction projects currently underway at IAH include a 160-acre new cargo facility, a consolidated rental car facility to house nine rental car companies and a new 685,000 square foot Federal Inspection Services Building to house federal inspection agencies (INS, Customs, Agriculture and Fish and Wildlife) and an adjoining international Terminal E (for Continental only) which will add up to an additional 23 gates for international flights. This will expand the airport’s ability to serve international travelers from 2,500 per hour to 4,000 per hour. HOU is also under a major terminal and concourse expansion and renovation project. At HOU a new 24 gate central concourse and terminal renovations are under construction.
