Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, R-Ill., has blocked a last-minute aviation security bill, at least temporarily, after it became a potential vehicle for legislation to expand O’Hare International Airport. A House version of the bill, which would waive the Dec. 31 deadline for installing bomb-detection equipment at 40 airports and extend war risk insurance for airlines, also contains placeholder language requiring the Transportation Department to report on efforts to expand O’Hare, according to Capitol Hill sources.
