This document is intended as a guide for Federal facility managers in the use of pollution prevention tools to reduce their waste generation and emission or release rates in order to meet compliance objectives. The document includes valuable information pertaining to pollution prevention opportunity assessments, training and outreach, energy conservation and efficiency, cost/benefit analysis, life-cycle costing, total cost assessment, life-cycle analysis, and pollution prevention program planning.

Office of Research and Development. October 1991. EPA/625/M-91-044.*

The EPA has funded a pilot project at the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, PA to assist small- and medium-size manufacturers who want to minimize their generation of waste but who lack the expertise to do so. Under agreement with EPA=s Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory, the Science Center has established three Waste Minimization Assessment Centers (WMACs). This assessment was done by engineering faculty and students at the University of Tennessee=s (Knoxville) WMAC. The WMAC team performed the assessment at a plant that rebuilds railcar bearing assemblies -- approximately 163,200 bearing components per year.
